Transformation Through a Deep Renovation and a Thoughtful Home Addition

Mountain views, a great local school, and the location attracted the family to this property, but the original home was too small and dated for their lifestyle. Small upgrades bought them a few years, but 3 growing kids and their busy schedules eventually made a deep renovation inevitable.

Working with the team at Joan Heaton Architects, original volumes were transformed into bright, clean, modern spaces, creating a dramatic before and after. High-use features from the original home were reimagined and repositioned to support logical flow and convenience. The new home addition created much needed space, including a primary suite on the first floor, two home offices, and the luxury of a home gym with a sauna.

Built with Silver Maple’s panelization approach, this deep renovation, home addition, and new garage workshop were completed quickly, minimizing the family’s displacement.

Sculptural Details Add Beauty and Light for an Impressive Before and After Transformation

Transforming the form and function of the original house, including adding square footage, brightening previously low-ceilinged rooms, and updating systems and finishes, was the primary goal. Ensuring the new home also reflected the aesthetic values of the current occupants was also a priority. These combined efforts resulted in a dramatic before and after.

The deliberate use of bold metal, expansive glass, and custom cabinetry, complemented by the details of tile, wood, and tadelakt texture, brings cohesion to the renovation and home addition. The two staircases speak to each other through shared materials but are not limited to mimicry. In the main entry, a metal panel wall accepts the warm wood handrail while the slat wall conceals access to the basement stairs below. The treads of the second staircase appear to float between folded metal and wall, framed by a window that seems to cascade from the roof, all too airy and improbable to exist.
